Family Emigration
Emigration - but an emigration which lasted for only one year !
4 December 1891
 Launceston, Tasmania, Australia

Citation details: E-mail from Wynne & photo rec'd 21 Nov 2013; plus e-mail 16 Jan 2016
Note: AT THE TIME OF THEIR EMIGRATION, JULIA'S BROTHER HOWELL WAS ALREADY ESTABLISHED IN TASMANIA (he arrived there in January 1884). Undoubtedly a major factor in their decision to emigrate, and in their choice of destination (information from Wynne Hellegouarch Jan 2016). More on Howell here: http://www.clan-davies.org/webtrees/individual.php?pid=I14999&ged=DFT2006c.ged
Note: On December 4th 1891, the family - parents and eight children aged from 1 to 16 (the youngest child was baptised at Llanwynno in October 1891) - emigrated to Tasmania. They sailed on SS Austral from London to Sydney ... however, disillusionment soon set in and the whole family returned exactly a year later arriving on the 'Ophir' on December 4th 1892. Between Sydney and Hobart, they travelled on the 'Pateena'................................The following extracted from a later e-mail received from Wynne 16 Jan 2016:............................Davy, Julia and their 8 children were accompanied by a Miss E THOMAS. She had intrigued me and I had supposed she was one of Davy’s many THOMAS cousins in Llanwonno or some other local girl they had taken along to help with the children. But one of Howell's descendants in Victoria immediately asked me if I had any idea what had happened to Howell’s eldest daughter, Edith Elizabeth, who did not travel with father and step-mother or, apparently, with her brothers, but turned up in Tasmania and was married there in 1895. It is tempting to think that she was being chaperoned by Davy & co - unfortunately the passenger list indicates her age as 26, whereas she was in fact about 14. The cousin and I both think it’s too much of a coincidence not to be true. This family group travelled from Melbourne to Hobart on the ‘Pateena’, arriving on January 1 1892 (JONES and family, also Miss THOMAS ‘Launceston Examiner', 18/01/1892). They left Hobart on the same ship on October 26 1892 ( Mr and Mrs D JONES and eight children, ‘Launceston Examiner', 27/10/1892). So they spent 9-10 months in Tasmania. One of my correspondents says that such a short stay was extremely rare - if only on account of the expense involved, unless you were sponsored. Apparently the relative in Tasmania - i.e. Howell Thomas - lent them the money for the return journey. As a result, having sold up before leaving Wales, they were in straitened circumstances for some time after their return.
