It is not clear when he was appointed Registrar and Relieving Officer, but he shows this on the 1841 census. However he was relieved of these responsibilities in August 1842, see: NOTICE is hereby given, that, by an order of the Poor Law Commissioners for England and Wales bearing date the 28th day of July, 1842, WILLIAM PREES one of the Relieving Officers of the Bridgend and Cowbridge Union, and Registrar of Births and Deaths for the Maesteg District thereof is removed from his said Office of Relieving Officer, whereby (in pursuance of the provisions of the Act of 6th and 7th William the Fourth, cap. 86) he doth henceforth cease to hold the Office, of Registrar of Births and Deaths aforesaid. General Registrar Office, July 30th, 1842.
