Note
The book; "THE STRICT BAPTISTS CHAPELS OF ENGLAND" Volume 5 "THE CHAPELS OF WILTSHIRE AND THE WEST" by Robert W. Oliver, makes the following reference to Martha Marshman: [Text from research by Richard WILTSHIRE] "Between Chippenham and Calne, lies the Village of Studley with its Chapel called "Little Zoar" [see http://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/community/getchurch.php?id=723.] Its origin owed much to the sanctified energy of Martha Wiltshire, wife of a local Farmer. Martha born at Hilperton, and as a child was brought up under a sound Ministry at the Tabernacle, an Independent Chapel at Trowbridge. At about the age of eighteen she was called by grace at Calne under the Ministry of a Mr. Lucy. About the year 1802, Martha married William Wiltshire, a Widower, who already had five children. As the years rolled on Martha herself was to bear eleven children. Each Sabbath she and her husband would trudge into Chippenham to worship at the Old Baptist Chapel. In 1811 William and Martha joined the Church there being baptised in the river by William Clift of Westbury Leigh. With the growing family the journey became increasingly difficult and Martha plucked up the courage to ask Lord Landsdowne, the local land owner for a piece of land on which to build a Chapel. He agreed to lease a plot for 99 years at a ground rent of one shilling per year. Interested persons began to help. Women dug out stone from the quarry during the day and their husbands moved them to the site in the evening. Local Farmers lent men and horses. Mr Wiltshire, himself had a Saw Pit m ade outside his house, where Volunteers could work. Eventually in 1814 Little Zoar was opened for Worship. In October 1816 William and Martha Wiltshire together with 3 others were dismissed from Membership at Chippenham to form a Church at Studley. When the time for the expiry of the lease was due, the then Lord Landsdowne extended it for a further Fifty years. When the second term was nearing its expiry date the Landlord agreed to sell the freehold to the Church for a nominal fee. In 1877 there were eleven members (of the church) and although there were a few subsequent additions, the last Baptismal service appeared to have taken place in August 1883 when two candidates were Baptised by W. H. Pocock. The last two Deac ons were James and George Lane both of whom died in 1903. Before 1910 James. C. Pocock of Durlett Farm, Bromham conducted a service on a Sunday, if no Minister were available. In 1914 he handed over the management of the Chapel to Gad Wiltshire of Studley, who conducted afternoon services until December 1937, reading a sermon, when no minister could be obtained. He handed over responsibility to H. B. Pitt of Trowbridge and W. H. Taylor of Melksham. This arrangement continued until 1956 when Mr Pitt's illness compelled him to hand over responsibility to the Trustees, who appointed Mr Shiles of Chippenham and later Mr George Wiltshire of Studley to manage the Chapel. In 1958 the last regular attender from the Village moved away".

Note
. Towards the end of her life Martha wrote a journal to be passed on to her children. This has been transcribed - see source reference.
