KENNETH GORDON RODERMEL-- GENEVA ILENE RODERMEL SURPRISE, Ariz. - Kenneth Gordon Rodermel passed away after a long battle with cancer before his 85th birthday on February 26, 2014, in Surprise, Arizona with Geneva by his side. He was born February 29, 1929, the seventh child of devoted parents, Charles and Gertrude Rodermel in Shannon, Illinois. Ken was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Lewis, Charles Robert, and Donald, and one sister, Dorothea Staats. Geneva Ilene (Burkholder) Rodermel passed away on March 26th, 2014, at the age of 84, in Surprise, Arizona. She was born in rural Lanark on May 14, 1929, the second child of loving parents, Glenn and Carrie Burkholder, of Freeport, Illinois. Ken and Geneva were married in 1950. Geneva was preceded in death by her parents, and brother, Donald Burkholder. Ken and Geneva's lives were dedicated to their family, friends, businesses, sports, and numerous civic and community service organizations. For many years they owned and operated Rodermel Realtors, Inc. in Freeport, Illinois, where Ken was a Real Estate Broker and Geneva a Realtor Associate. They later owned a Century 21 franchise until retiring in Arizona. Ken was bestowed the honor of Realtor of the Year in 1989, by the Freeport Board of Realtors. He served on many committees and held offices with the Freeport Board of Realtors. Refereeing basketball was his avocation and in 1990, he was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame for his officiating. He was a lifetime member of Kiwanis International and served as Lt. Governor 1982 - 1983, for the Illinois/Eastern Iowa District. In 2003, he received an Award of Distinction in forming and serving as the 1st President of the Lincoln/Douglas Kiwanis Club of Freeport. During retirement, Geneva and Ken started a chapter where Ken served as the first President of the Sun City Grand Kiwanis Club, Surprise, Arizona. He was the Arizona State Director of the HOBY program. Ken was a member of The Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of the State of Illinois, surpassing a 50 year membership in September 2011. He attended the Evergreen Lodge No. 170 in Freeport, Illinois and was a 32nd degree mason. Geneva was an active and longtime member of the Eastern Star and Amity Society. She especially enjoyed helping to plan the annual Charity Ball and the Amity Follies. Ken was a member in good standing of the Lodge Council Chapter Consistory, Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Freeport, Illinois. Ken was also a member of Tebala Shrine Rockford, Illinois, as well as a lifetime member of the Elks Club. Ken and Geneva were longtime members of Embury United Methodist Church, Freeport, Illinois. They enjoyed the time they spent with family and friends, and treasured the time spent with their daughters and grandson playing golf, going to sporting events, and vacationing. During his retirement, Ken delighted in making children and families happy by being a professional Santa Claus. On many occasions Geneva would be by his side as Mrs. Claus. Ken and Geneva were cherished parents of daughters, Susan Lameyer, Tombstone, AZ, and Kimberly (Don) Earlenbaugh, Plainfield, IL. They were beloved grandparents to Ryan Lameyer, Marana, AZ. Ken is also survived by his sisters, Charlotte Flickinger, Lanark, Margaret Fogel and Roberta Livingston, Freeport, Carole (Donn) Muckey, Anaheim, CA; sister-in-law, Barbara Rodermel, Laramie, WY; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Cremation rites were accorded at Camino Del Sol Funeral Home in Sun City West, AZ. A Memorial Service will be held in the Chapel of Peace at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Freeport, Illinois, on Saturday, May 10th, 2014, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. A Masonic Service will be held followed by a Commendation Service officiated by Reverend Bill Blomberg. Committal and burial will be private. A memorial has been established in their names.
