DEATH OF MR. JENKIN DAVIES, C.C., OF ENGLEFIELD A well-known figure in local agricultural circles has this week passed away by the death of Mr. Jenkin Davies, at his residence, Wykcroft Farm, Englefield, on Thursday morning. Mr. Davies six months ago had a very bad attack of rheumatic fever, from which he was not expected to recover. He gradually got better, but his heart was left weakened, and since that time his health has seemed to be failing, and the least exertion has brought on attacks of angina pectoris. The deceased gentleman, however, seemed better than usual on Wednesday, and retired to rest about nine o'clock apparently in his usual health. An hour later he was seized with angina pectoris, and gradually got worse till about half-past three, when he passed away. Mr.Davies was born at Ystradyfodwg, in the Taff Vale (a small village, now a very populous district), in 1824, and he was practically the first to adopt the four-course system of farming in Glamorganshire, and he also bought the first drill used. Aboutthe year 1855 he settled at Wykcroft Farm, Englefield, which was then only one-fourth of its present size. In his early days Mr. Davies was of a rather inventive turn of mind, and in the year 1865 he brought out and patented a sack holder which soon obtained a ready sale. Mr. Davies's was a busy life, and he was much respected as a public man for his integrity and business tact. In 1888, when the County Councils were first formed, Mr. Davies was returned unopposed as a county councillor for the Bradfield Division ofthe county, and no opposition was offered to his return when he sought re-election in 1892. Mr. Davies has been for over twenty years a guardian for the Bradfield Union, and he was also overseer for the parish of Englefield. The deceased gentlemantook a great interest in agriculture generally, and was for five years joint secretary with Mr. Charles West of the Pangbourne Agricultural Society (now called the South Berks Agricultural Association), a post now occupied by his son, Mr. E. Davies, and during that time the subscriptions doubled. He was also a member of the Royal Agricultural Society and the Royal Agricultural Benefit Institution. He was on the committee of the Reading Fat Stock Association, and also a member of the Berks and Oxon Chamber of Agriculture. Besides his farming operations, Mr. Davies carried on the business of an auctioneer. He also had a stand at the Reading Cattle Market in conjunction with his sons. The funeral will take place on Monday, at Englefield. The service at the church will be at four o'clock.

Sudden death of Mr Jenkin Davies We regret to announce the death of Mr Jenkin Davies of Englefield, one of the best known agriculturists of this neighbourhood, which event occurred suddenly on ThUSA morning in his 69th year. The deceased had been connected with Mr Benyon's Englefield Estate for the long period of 35yrs. He was a successful farmer and gained a prize in the competition for best cultivated and managed farms in the district at the visit of the Royal Agricultural Soc. of England to Reading. He was also a Valuer of agricultural stock of high distinction, his opinion on such matters being much sought and for a number of years, he has conducted auction sales in the Reading Cattle Market and elsewhere. Mr Davies represented Bradfield at the County Council ever since its establishment and proved himself a valuable member and his loss will be greatly felt. His son Mr E. Davies is the Secretary of the Royal South Berks. Agricultural Ass. (late Pangbourne Ass.) Research by Carolyn Boulton, Reading August 2002

Reading: Royal Agricultural Show Reading has been very busy preparing for the forthcoming Royal Agricultural Show, for which two large fields have been specially prepared with turf, shedding, and fencing, the work of some months. Fine weather permitting, it promises to be one of the largest shows on record, particularly as cattle were excluded from the Brighton Show. A line of railway has been constructed from the South-Eastern Railway, near by, to the showground, in order to facilitate the unloading of massive machinery. The disasters of the Kilburn show are not likely to be repeated at Reading, for the site chosen is high and dry, on a bed of gravel, in addition to which good roads have been constructed. The complete show opens this day, but inspection of the machinery has been permitted since last Saturday. The Prince of Wales is understood to have decided to attend the show on the Wednesday. Sums of money have been given for decorations, and Reading will be en fete during the week. It is to be hoped that the occasion may be favoured with sunshine, although one of the chief attractions of the show will be that of the haymakers, who undertake to make good hay without sunshine. A contest with these machines for a prize of one hundred guineas, given byMessrs. Sutton and Sons, will take place at the Manor Farm; and to see grass thus converted into hay will doubtless be a great attraction. A new feature, too, is the machine for converting milk into butter, without setting the milk to obtain the cream. We are led to expect a cow being milked at one end of the machine and the cream extracted and converted into pats of butter before our eyes. It is fortunate for these inventors that they did not live in the dark ages, or assuredly their liveswould have been of little value. Mr.Davies was born at Ystradyfodwg, in the Taff Vale (a small village, now a very populous district), in 1824, and he was practically the first to adopt the four-course system of farming in Glamorgan shire, and he also bought the first drill used. About the year 1855 he settled at Wykcroft Farm, Englefield, which was then only one-fourth of its present size. In his early days Mr. Davies was of a rather inventive turn of mind, and in the year 1865 he brought out and patented a sack holder whichsoon obtained a ready sale. Mr. Davies's was a busy life, and he was much respected as a public man for his integrity and business tact. In 1888, when the County Councils were first formed, Mr. Davies was returned unopposed as a county councillor for the Bradfield Division of the county, and no opposition was offered to his return when he sought re-election in 1892. Mr. Davies has been for over twenty years a guardian for the Bradfield Union, and he was also overseer for the parish of Englefield. The deceased gentleman took a great interest in agriculture generally, and was for five years joint secretary with Mr. Charles West of the Pangbourne Agricultural Society (now called the South Berks Agricultural Association), a post now occupied by his son, Mr. E.Davies, and during that time the subscriptions doubled.

Occupation | The Illustrated London News Text: July 8, 1882, p.45 Reading: Royal Agricultural Show Reading has been very busy preparing for the forthcoming Royal Agricultural Show, for which two large fields have been specially prepared with turf, shedding, and fencing, the work of some months. Death | Obituary - Berkshire Chronicle Publication: Photocopy from microfilm Citation details: 16 Sep 1893 Date of entry in original source: 14 August 2002 Text: Transcript of Obituary - Berkshire Chronicle for Saturday Sept 16th 1893 DEATH OF MR. |

Note | The first of Richard Davies' sons born to Gwenllian Rees, at Bodringallt, Ystradyfodwg, in November 1824, Jenkin moved with his parents, in 1827, to Brynchwith, Llandyfodwg, where the family remained until the late 1830's, when they took overCandleston Farm (Candleston Higher) Merthyr Mawr.
In 1854, at the age of 30, Jenkin married 22-year old Anne Wiltshire, daughter of Henry Wiltshire, butcher, of Studley, Near Calne in Wiltshire. Anne had been working as a house maid at Merthyr Mawr Mansion. Jenkin and Anne moved into Mynydd Herbert, a farm in Tythegston, about a mile and a half from the Davies family farm at Candleston.
In November 1855, Anne gave birth to twin boys, Ebenezer and Ezra. The event was to end in tragedy, because two weeks later Anne died, followed by one of the babies, Ezra a few weeks after that. Martha Wiltshire, Anne's sister, who had been a witness at their marriage, came to nurse Anne during her last days and to help Jenkin with the twins.
Within months of Anne's death, Jenkin and Martha left Merthyr Mawr and, with Ebenezer, started a new life together in Berkshire - at Wickcroft Farm, on the Englefield estate. See: http://www.englefieldestate.co.uk/about-us/our-history
Jenkin and Martha lived together there as man and wife, but did not marrry as, until 1907, it was illegal in England and Wales for a man to marry his deceased wife's sister. For details of the Deceased Wife's Sisters Act see:
http://www.litencyc.com/php/stopics.php?rec=true&UID=1430
Between 1855 and 1881, Martha gave birth to no less than fourteen children at Wickcroft Farm, eleven of whom survived to maturitry.
During his time in Englefield, Jenkin became a well-known and well-respected member of the agricultural community. We learn from his obituary that he was one of the first "to adopt the four-course system of farming in Glamorgan" and that he "alsobought the first drill used". He was appointed joint secretary of the Pangbourne Agricultural Society (which later became the South Berks Agricultural Association) a post which his son, Ebenezer was later to hold. He was also a member of the RoyalAgricultural Society and the Royal Agricultural Benefit Institution. He was on the committee of the Reading Fat Stock Association and a member of the Berks and Oxon Chamber of Agriculture. He had a stand at the Reading Cattle Market in conjunctionwith his sons. He is known to have invented several items of 'agricultural machinery', including a 'sack holder', which he patented in 1865, and these he demonstrated on his stand at the Royal Agricultural Society Reading Show in 1882, together with a range of proprietory agricultural machinery. [The Source Folder contains details of his stand at the Royal Agricultural Show and newspaper coverage of the event].
Jenkin's activities were not limited to the field of agriculture. Professionally, he also carried on the business of an auctioneer, and he was extremely active in public and community affairs. He served on the Berkshire County Council as Councillorfor Bradfield, first elected in 1888 and re-elected in 1892.
Extracts from minutes of Berkshire County Council Meetings are held in the Source Folder, detailing the committees on which Jenkin served, etc. He was, for over twenty years, Guardian of the Bradfield Union, see:
http://www.apwb.com/friendsofbradfieldarchives/friendsofbradfieldarchives/page.php?page=workhouse&lang=
and an overseer of the parish of Englefield. Notes taken from minutes of meetings of the Guardians of Bradfield Union, detailing his active participation, are held in the Source Folder.
Jenkin's heart was seriously weakened by an attack of rheumatic fever in March 1893 and he succumbed to angina six months later, on 14th. September 1893. He was buried at Englefield with Martha and their offspring who died in childhood - Margaret, Gwenllian and Henry. |
Note | The law in England & Wales did not permit marriage to a deceased wife's sister. Until the passing of the Deceased Wife's Sisters Act of 1907
see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deceased_Wife%27s_Sister%27s_Marriage_Act_1907
The Consanguinity and Affinity restrictions of the 1537 & 1835 Marriage Acts prohibited such marriage. |
